Holbrook to Shotley Gate - 4th of September 2023

Last day of the summer holidays and we decided to head down to the Estuary on a perfect sunny day, I have walked from Holbrook bay to Shotley Gate several times and its a good 6 or so miles which includes a lot of beach walking that follows the estuary all the way, the girls would not be up for that so we made our way down to Holbrook bay to do a bit of exploring, the tide was out on arrival so we got right into the bay, samphire was readily available and the girls got a taste of that but weren’t overly keen, I on the other hand love the stuff! We made our way along the footpath that points Shotley way and onto the beach and the girls weren’t fazed by the strong winds and cold water, I certainly wasn’t going to be taking a dip!

We made our way towards Shotley via the winding roads through Harkstead and Erwaton, there were huge vessels across the Estuary where the River Orwell meets the Stour Estuary and out towards the North Sea in Felixstowe, even at a distance they are absolutely massive the girls couldn’t really comprehend just how big they were, boats were making there way through the lock gate and out into the estuary and the girls took in how the lock gates work, we made the most of the sunshine and had our picnic and made the most of the last day before School and Nursery restarts for the year….

The video begins in Holbrook bay looking out towards Wrabness, then out to Shotley, Harwich and Felixstowe in the distance.
